Creating Stunning Desmos Graph Art: A Passionate Project

When it comes to graphing, most students think of equations as a means to solve problems. However, with Desmos, the possibilities are endless! In this article, we'll explore how to create stunning graph art that showcases your passion and creativity.

One of the best things about Desmos is that you're not limited by the number of equations you use. You can experiment with different types of functions, such as linear, quadratic, exponential, trigonometric, logarithmic, and more! For this project, aim to include at least eight different types of functions to create a visually striking piece of art.

To make it even more challenging and exciting, I want you to choose a topic that you're passionate about. This could be anything from your favorite hobby to a personal interest or a cause close to your heart. Once you've decided on your topic, use Desmos to bring your ideas to life by creating a graph art piece.

In my experience, giving students the freedom to create their own projects without too many specific instructions can be incredibly empowering. By not limiting them with strict guidelines, I was amazed to see that many students used over 30 equations in their projects! The quality of their work was truly amazing, and it's a testament to the power of creativity and ownership.

For my precalculus students, our first project centered around school spirit at Horace Greeley High School in Chappaqua, NY. We had so much fun with it that we actually did three art projects throughout the school year! One student even created an impressive portrait of Horace Greeley himself using Desmos.

As a math educator for the past twelve years, I've learned that giving students choice is an effective way to engage them and foster authentic learning. With today's technology, students have access to step-by-step solutions at their fingertips, making it easier than ever to help them take ownership of their learning.

In our hybrid model, where some students worked in person and others from home, I was thrilled to see that the Desmos Art Project brought everyone together. It was a fantastic way to build community and encourage collaboration while still allowing for individual creativity and expression.
